A Message of Thanks from Cherin Marie

When I reported Mark Rivera to the police in May 2019, I had no idea what was in store for my family. Nothing could have prepared us for the isolation, confusion, fear, and exhaustion that we would experience as we navigated the criminal justice system over the following months and years.

That season was the most difficult and painful of my life, but as I look back I am overwhelmed with love and gratitude for the family, friends, advocates, and supporters who stood by our side throughout this harrowing journey.

I am so grateful to every one of you who helped my family through this. So many of you selflessly gave your time, energy, and resources to encourage and sustain us as we navigated the trauma and endless delays of the criminal process.

Some of you did not even know my family, but you came to trial to provide support for us; you listened and pressed in, while so many others turned away.

Many of you traveled from out of state to attend court hearings with us. I am so humbled that you made this sacrifice on behalf of my family.

Many of you sent messages of support and encouragement; those meant so much to us.

Some of you provided meals, childcare, and other practical help we needed. We could not have done this without you.

So many of you took time off work so you could attend court hearings with us, even knowing they were likely to be canceled at the last minute.

All of you helped my family through this. All of you brought beauty and hope to what had previously been ashes and despair.

As we prepare our victim impact statement for Mark Rivera’s February 10 sentencing hearing, my family feels empowered and strengthened by your support and we are so grateful for every one of you.

We began this journey feeling utterly alone and abandoned, but we are ending it surrounded by more love, truth, and light than we ever thought possible.

Thank you all.

Cherin and her family
